Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Colossians 3:2

In Matthew 6:33, the word of God tell us what the focus of our heart ought to be, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Human desire and affection have the propensity to create driving force, an urge, inclination, the want of things we love etc, however, as our opening bible verse has admonished us priority for the believer goes from things that have eternal value where Christ is at the right hand of the Father first, and then to earthly things. The believer must learn this scale of preference.

Knowing that the direction that a man’s desire and affection is, that’s where the heart will be. Thus, as believers we need to guard our heart and thoughts against vain desires.

The word asks us to delight ourselves in the Lord, according to Psalms 37:4, “delight yourself in the Lord so shall he grant you the desires of your heart” we see that delighting in the lord makes him grant us our heart desires. The usage of that word “delight” though suggests that when a man begins to desire what God wants him to desire, that is when a man begins to desire God’s desire, simply put when a man comes into alignment with God’s desire—it makes it easy for God to implement the manifestation of the expected outcome. This means that a man can find God’s will and move in its direction, just as the opening verse has alluded to.

1 peter 2:2 also lets us understand that we need to desire the word as a new born child desires milk, the way they cry and throw tantrums, not minding the convenience of the mother, that’s the way we must desire God’s word in order to grow.

Brethren we are enjoined today to set our desires and affections on the things of God, and he will grant all your heart desires and supply all your needs.

Confession: I believe, and I confess that my affections are set on things above in God’s word and not on inordinate affections of this world and all my heart desires are met today even as I pray believing.
