Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2 NIV

In laying the foundation this morning, it is important to note that God does not hate the world and as such we are not meant to hate the world, the bible admonition to ” love not the world” is not a call to hate but a call to be different. We must be careful not to imitate the world. As believers, we have to constantly remind ourselves that we received a new life in Christ, a new life that separates us as children of God. As children of God, we have a kingdom that we represent, a kingdom that has its culture and values.

Jesus while addressing the multitude in Matthew 5: 14-16 said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill that cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven”.

One of the things to note from this scripture is that God’s purpose for giving us His light is not to have us hide it away or place it under a bowl because it is worthy to note that when fire is blocked out from oxygen, the flame fizzles out. Light’s major purpose is to dispel darkness. If we, having been saved from darkness continue to conform with darkness, what is the purpose of the Life of God we received? Light is supposed to correct darkness and not to become darkness itself.

There is a gen-z concept called FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out. FOMO makes people jump on the latest trends and actions because everyone is doing it.  Whilst there might be nothing outrightly wrong in trends, you’ve got to have that spine in us that keeps us straight even when everyone is bending towards something, you’ve got to show that you’re of the light. When the latest dress trend comes out, when the latest slang drops, when the sweetest jam starts trending everywhere.

Do your best to live as light in the midst of a dark and perverse generation.
