“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they are not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

‭‭1 Timothy 6:17-19‬‬

It is easy to be swayed by materialism and the riches of this world to the detriment of our relationship and standing with God and even forfeiting the true riches of the kingdom, most do it without regard for what is right and moral and although it is the will of God to see us flourish and prosper, he is much more interested in seeing us abound in good works and things partaking to the true riches of the kingdom because what does it really profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul; Matthew 16:26‬‬ “For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

According to our opening text, we see that we are charged with being rich in goods works and this would mean that a person rich towards God is rich(even materially) and abounds in good works because it’s in this way the father is glorified just as we see in Matthew 5:16‬; “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” As lights in this world, we are enjoined to make sure we shine as lights by the good works men can see in our lives and these good works include being rich in love for God and others, in faith in God, in hope, in the knowledge of him amongst others.

Those who are rich towards God and abound in these good works also have a strong relationship with God and this relationship is established and built up effectively in prayers Jude1:20 “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,” because man has been given the mandate to pray as seen in Luke 18:1‬‬ “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;” and 1 Thessalonians 5:17‬‬; “Pray without ceasing.”Another way to being rich towards God is also by studying the scriptures and meditating on it; Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

Being rich towards God is also in our selfless service to others and God’s work, Jesus teaches us to do this by living a life of selfless service and sacrifice for others. He shows that we can be rich in God’s Kingdom when we learn to forgive others, Colossians‬ ‭3:13‬‬; “forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” And to care for those in the fringes of society without calling attention to ourselves,1 Peter 4:9 “Use hospitality one to another without grudging.”.We have been given access through the gift of salvation to receive knowledge of the true riches which God has given man in Christ Jesus according to Colossians 1:27 “to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” Christ is in us is a representation of our hope in the glory of God and we being made partakers.

Being rich towards God entails great service and commitment to the things of God and in the household of faith amongst brethren and in your local church. Desire the true riches of his glory in Christ Jesus and don’t be swayed by materialism to the detriment of your soul.

Confession: I confess that I am rich in good works and my trust is not in the riches of the world but in the living God who has given me freely all things to enjoy. Amen
