RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD
[Yet] first [you must] understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is [a matter] of any personal or private or special interpretation (loosening, solving). (AMP)2 Pet.1.20
The bible is a holy book and it contains the writings of men inspired by God and can even be addressed as God’s word, however, it’ll be a mistake to take every verse, word, or letter in Scripture loosely, which is why it’s imperative to rightly divide the word. In the bible we have people who didn’t act right, for example, someone reads the account of Acts 5 of Ananias and Sapphira and allows an ungodly fear to grip them thinking, “God just wants to save me but can kill me if I do a wrong” well you will be missing the point and entering into error by such interpretation.
Our interpretation of scriptures is what determines its fruitfulness in our lives, in the parable of the sower in Mattew 13, we carefully realise that the seeds sown were viable, that is there was nothing wrong with them, the problem however was with the soil the seeds fell on, the soil which Christ explained as the heart of man Matt.13.19 – When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.
We see therefore that there’s nothing wrong with the word but everything depends on our understanding of it, there are people who read the bible just to make a case against it, you know it won’t be profitable to them unless they open their heart to the entrance of the word.
2Tim.2.15 – Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Believers who really desire to grow must move from “1Pet.2.2 – As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,” to 2 Timothy 2:15. We must be diligent in the study of God’s word, lest we will remain in a state of babyhood and won’t come unto maturity.
Heb.5.12-13 – For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.- For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.
Someone asked what the easiest way to go through the bible is? It’s joining a local church where sound doctrine is taught!
Papa Hagin said “if the church taught the bible the way we ought to, there wouldn’t be a need for bible schools” I believe that too. The church is the pillar and ground of truth-1Tim.3.15 – but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Thank God for churches like the Heirs Church, where sound doctrine is taught, if you diligently follow through, you will record tremendous growth in your understanding of the scriptures.
You must also give yourself to the study of the scriptures especially the Epistles for they are written to us; the Church.
Have a Bible study plan/group- there are times when friends meet up not to gist but just to sit together and contemplate scriptures, this should be a frequent practice amongst believers.
Col.3.16 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
