RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD

RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Tim.2.15

There is a way to rightly divide and study the word of God. When you read a letter, do you read your own meaning to the letter? You’re to find the meaning of what was written, not cook up your own meaning. Isn’t that what we all do?

This is the same way the bible should be read. The statement “rightly dividing the word ” in this verse of the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15) is from the greek orthotomeo. This word means to move from one point to arrive at a predetermined destination by cutting the way through to the end in view. There is a destination in view whenever you’re reading the Bible, and that end in view that you’re looking for is the intended purpose of the author. It is in discovery of the intended meaning of the author(s) that we’re rightly dividing the word. To do anything apart from this is to abuse the sacred writings.

The word is so powerful, powerful so much so that everything we need as believers is already In the word. Meaning everything you’ve been looking for is in your hands, but you do not know how to use it. In the 2nd epistle, the Apostle Peter said “according as His divine power hath given us all that pertains to life and godliness” 2 Peter 1:3. Your knowledge and usage of the word is a great advantage. Little wonder the Apostle Paul said to Timothy “Meditate upon these things, give thyself wholly to them, that thy profiting may appear to all” 1 Timothy 4:15. He told him what things to meditate/give attention to—1 Timothy 4:13 “Till I come give attention to reading”. Paul charged Timothy to devote his youthful time to reading the word. To search and come into revelation of the word for himself, and his profiting will appear unto all onlookers. In the same way I say to you—give your attention to the word.

Ephesians1:16-18 is the prayer that should be prayed before studying the Bible, Bible study is a spiritual act, even though we observe literary principles while doing so. Your bible study period is a powerful engagement and the Holy Spirit in the process now grants revelation as you read after praying.

So you’ll begin to read the Bible through the lens of the finished work of Jesus.

Rightly dividing the word is not something optional. Have you met some people who wouldn’t just bulge even after you have provided better scripture evidence that the revelation they have is inconsistent?, that is not a way to grow. The word is not of any private interpretation, you cannot make statements of “that is how I understand it”, “this is my own understanding of what that verse is saying”.

Dividing the word rightly therefore requires diligence like a surgeon; you want to be precise and accurate. Glory to God.
