THE FATHER AND HIS FAMILY
“Of His own will He brought us Forth by the word of Truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His Creatures.”James 1:18 KJV
Our opening verse in the NIV says “He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.” (NIV)
The Gospel is an invitation for man to become a part of a family, to become the son of God. God our Father chose us, we didn’t become His children by chance, He had predestined us to become His children. You may have felt that you had to earn your earthly father’s love and respect by accomplishing great things to make him proud of you, as I’m certain this is not strange, but God is not a father like that. The definition of His fatherhood is love, care, concern etc.
Romans 5:8 tells us that “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
While we were still sinners. While we were still blowing it. While we were not measuring up. While we were oblivious to Him and His love, He sent His Son to die for us. That is unconditional, sacrificial love and it is unlike anything you can experience on this earth. God is a Father who chose to love you and you didn’t do a thing to earn it.
Another way God demonstrates himself as our Father is in that He gave us himself by giving us His Spirit
Luke 11:13 comparing God and earthly fathers says “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”
It’s natural for humans to be selfish and consider themselves before anyone else. So, if you had a dad who was unselfish and willing to sacrifice his own comfort for yours, you had a gift – a glimpse of what Your Heavenly Father is like. Scripture tells us, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).
Like your earthly father trains and guides you into becoming the best version of yourself, your heavenly Father does the same, through your ministry gift, who is a father figure in your immediate family which is your local church. Proverbs 3:11-12: “do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”
God knows your thoughts before you think them, your words before you say them, and your actions before you carry them out. And with all that intimate knowledge of you, He continues to love you like the perfect Father. What’s more? He cares for you.
