Then God said, “Let Us make man in our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 1:26

Our bible text helps us understand the intentions behind creation, it helps us see how God intentionally decided to create us according to His likeness and form. How he poured out himself into us during creation. How he took his time to reproduce himself through and in us. Even before the fall of man, the man in Christ has always been God’s idea for mankind, Eph.2.10 – For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 4:23-24 and Genesis 1:28 helps us understand that God’s intention was to recreate a character like him, a life like his, and supremacy like his over the earth.

“…and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” -Ephesians 4:23-24

“Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” -Genesis 1:28

The verses above show us in two dynamic ways how the image of God is to be reflected In and through us. The first part talks about WHO we are as the Image of God, and the second part tells HOW being the Image of God is supposed to play out as we walk the earth. One made in the Image of God is a righteous man, a man who has been made complete and whole, a man who has been made perfect and just with God through the salvation made available by Christ, then this man through the power of God (The Holy Spirit) as he exists in Gods Image is supposed to take dominion over this earth, live a fulfilled life, live a life that exists as a true reflection of God’s love.

We can then further see how this reflection of God’s Image can play out via the presence of his spirit in us; how we can truly exist in the image of God. One cannot claim to be an image of something if he doesn’t reflect certain characteristics of that thing. The next question will probably be what are these characteristics. These characteristics are already indwelling. This characteristic is a package that came with salvation.

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.-1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.-John 14:17

These verses tell us how we have received the holy spirit at salvation, and then this tells us that whatever character the holy spirit exhibits is the character of God, and how do we know these characters?

…But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law. -Galatians 5:22-23

Everyone made, was made in the image of God, this was severed by the fall of man and only by Christ is man restored to the original intent of God for Man. Rom.5.18 – Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. Rom.5.19 – For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
