WALKING IN LOVE

WALKING IN LOVE

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God.  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

1 John 4:7-8

One of the ways it is evident that we are believers is through our love walk. Understanding the love God demonstrated toward us helps us to better walk in love in our day to day lives.

Just as 1 john 3:16 says “By this, we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” So this tells me that my understanding of the love of God isn’t only measurable by how much I understand what Jesus did for me, but also, in my love disposition toward other men. Listen, men who walk in love are not weaklings, they are no fools, as the world culture has made it to look. To walk in love is to be really wise.

The summary of the entire law is love. “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself”. [Galatians 5:14]

Romans 13:10 also shows us that love is the way to fulfil the law. How amazing is that? Talk of a shortcut. Love hurts nobody, he does not speak ill of everyone, he treats people the way he would love to be treated.

As important as the subject of walking in love is for believers, the quality of your love walk is determined by your spiritual growth. The knowledge of God’s word, especially in the area of how we ought to live in love, is what strengthens our choice to walk in love, it reveals to us the reality of who we are in Christ, and consequently enables us to naturally walk in our nature, which is love—because that’s what you’re going to find as you study God’s word, that you have a new nature and that nature is love.

To what extent should a believer walk in love? The phrase ‘walk in love’ in Ephesians 5:2 is translated to mean “for you to be occupied with the love walk”.

The extent to which Christ gave himself for love is the extent we should give ourselves for love. Look at it like this; God wanting to enable us to have a glimpse of how much He had to put His displeasure, annoyance or grievance under subjection, in other to save us, He gave us the platform of walking in love. Thus, in walking in love toward our neighbour or fellow brethren, we get to develop a fresh appreciation for the redemptive work of Jesus toward us, because, like that offensive friend, neighbour, family member, we were once like that toward God. Such that now, you’re no longer just a grace receiver (from God), you’re a grace giver (like God). You become a man full of grace and as Jesus men can now say of you “he’s full of grace and truth”. This is not to teach believers to become 100% gullible in their dealings, however, this is what walking in love is.

1 John 3:16- laying down lives for the brethren does not mean hanging on the cross or dying physically but basically imitating the life of Jesus here on earth. Also, it just means shifting your focus and interest from self to God and others.

When you walk in love, you’ll only see the best in others, because love is the purity of God. Love only sees the good in others, not because love is naive, but because it has the power to change them for good. Walking in love is a high place in God; that’s why you must be determined to always walk in love.
