Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

Hebrews 13:7

In continuing our discussion on follower-ship, we need to have our eyes on certain things and not get them mixed up.

All of us are following Jesus. We are all His disciples.

However, we need to realize that Jesus is not here on earth again to mentor believers, to nurture them unto maturity that we may all attain unto the fullness in Him, what we have here on earth are His ministry gifts which He gave to the church.

This reveals to us that the anointing in the life of ministers was placed there by Christ Jesus, and He anointed them to be able to effectively minister to the church, they were anointed so they can raise God’s people unto maturity and deliver them into their inheritance in Christ.

Jesus anointed ministers so they can replace Him effectively. This is what led to the origination of churches.

Churches or what we refer to as local churches are smaller unit groups out of God’s global family. The head of the universal church is Jesus and He is also the head of the local divisions too.

A good example is the Nigerian Police Force. A big institution but present across each metropolis in smaller divisions. This is what a local church is. And so all of us individually fall under different local churches which still is a part of the global family. Following that ministry under the leadership of a good shepherd or overseer is following Jesus. Does it make sense? The receptiveness of a believer towards a ministry God has placed him/her in is very important, as it determines how well such can be blessed within that ministry.

At some point, certain people were following Jesus and He could discern their heart, of which “He had to change it for them” because He knows that their motive for following Him wasn’t refined. They were following because of their belly. John 6:25-27 “And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?” Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labour for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

Jesus saw that their hearts weren’t really with Him, said differently, their hearts weren’t on the message He preaches, they weren’t dedicatedly following because of the words of life they’ve found that Jesus has, but because to them, He was their restaurant. They needed Him for food and physical upkeep and because of this they’ll do everything possible to remain “like a follower” but they weren’t really followers.

Who then is a real follower? He is such that is following because of love! Love for the word, Love for the Lord, Love for the things of the Spirit. He is following because he has found where the word of life is. John 6:66-68 “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

It is that kind of people Jesus commits Himself to. It is that kind of people God allows the anointing in a ministry to impact the most.

CONFESSION: Father I thank you for your precious word and your great glory in the Spirit. I follow rightly, I follow as a proper disciple, in the name of Jesus and I benefit accordingly. Amen.
