YOU ARE ANOINTED
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.Acts 1:8
The first thing that probably comes to mind whenever anointing is mentioned is probably the olive oil applied to the believer’s body as a mark of identification or seclusion from God. However, what does it truly mean to be anointed? Originally, anointing was used as a ritual act, and it involved smearing, rubbing, or pouring oil on a person’s head. to symbolize selection, protection, and empowerment. So, the fact that it is a ritual, points to the fact that there is an involvement with deities or as used in this case, God. Therefore, to say “You are anointed” can simply be interpreted as “You are chosen”. So, it necessarily has nothing to do with oil. In this case, particularly, the anointing was done with the blood of Jesus and sealed by the Holy Spirit. So, I ask who are the chosen ones?
Peter answers the question above in 1 peter 2:9, which says “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light”. The use of “You” in the scripture above refers to a collective body, and that is God’s body, i.e., the church global, the body of believers, or saints. It refers to the body for which Christ took up the cross and shed his blood. That body is me and you. Every believer is anointed by God through Jesus Christ, and the testimony of that anointing is in the manifestation of the workings of the spirit. So, when next you come against the word anointing, just know it is referring to the redemptive work of Christ and the presence and in-dwelling of the holy spirit. As believers, we have all received God’s powers through the holy spirit, and this power is to serve one ultimate goal, which is to represent the one who has anointed us. In part b of 1 peter 2:9 quoted above, it says, “that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light”.
Dear anointed one, this is a call to reality. If you have always felt that “the anointed” referred to just a sect of God’s family, now you know that “the anointed” refers to the entirety of God’s body.
